Using Help to Find OutWhere It Went – Word 2010

There are some pretty cool tools to help you find out what went where. Some of them are even built into Word 2010.I admit that I’m the first to disparage certain aspects of Office’s Help system. I really don’t care for indexed help systems because their usefulness depends on my having the same mindset and vocabulary as whoever did the indexing. However, in the case of showing Word 2003 users where the corresponding Word 2010 commands are, Microsoft has done a good job. If you prefer not to navigate the Help system,  that’s fine. where you can quickly see where Word 2003 features are hidden in the new version.

In the old Westerns, answering the question ‘‘Which way did they go?’’ often meant looking for hoofprints. In Word 2010, it’s a bit easier.To begin, press F1. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of Search at the top of the Word Help window, and ensure that ‘‘Content from Office.com’’ is active instead of ‘‘Content on this computer’’ (the latter should have an X circled in red next to it). Next, in the Search box, type word 2003 menus, and press enter (or click Search). Click Get Started with Word 2010. Scroll down a little to ‘‘Missing the menus?’’ and click the ‘‘Interactive command-mapping guides’’ link, shown in Figure 3-1. This will start your web browser.

 

Once your browser loads, look for the link for the Interactive Guide for Word, and click it.(Alternatively, you can click Printable Reference.) If you’re running the interactive guide, onceit loads, click Start. This starts an interactive online Java applet.

Menu Commands

Choose menu commands as if you were using Word 2003. When you reach a terminal command,the interactive guide shows you how to access the same command in Word 2010. If the command doesn’t exist in Word 2010, the guide indicates that also.

Note that the guide does not show you context (or pop-up) menus. That’s because Word 2010

still has context menus. In many cases, however, they are not identical to Word 2003’s context menus, and you will need to rely on the ribbons or the QAT, or use other methods to meet the same needs.

Toolbar Commands

To learn the location of Word 2003 toolbar items in Word 2010, hover the mouse over the tool you’re looking for. Unfortunately, you are limited to the Standard and Formatting toolbars.
